The period has arrived when gyms and boutique fitness classes make the most of the rush of people by offering their new year specials, which often have specific conditions hidden in the fine print. They are aware that many of these individuals will stop coming within a few weeks, but still offer these promotions to make more profit, as some people forget to cancel their memberships.

Actually, a U.S. News study indicates that 80 percent of those who resolve to go to the gym in the new year abandon their goals by the end of February.

To be honest, I am not much of a gym enthusiast. However, I was once a member of pricey exclusive classes such as Pure Barre, Club Pilates, and 9Round that cost between $139 to $200 per month (excluding 9Round, which cost $70 per month, but unfortunately, I joined just two months before the pandemic arose and it got canceled). I convinced myself of the cost because I preferred having an instructor guiding me through my entire workout, unlike at a gym, where I had to work things out on my own. I needed that push. But I would still terminate my reservation at the very last minute and bear the expense of cancellation fees.

You could have spent the $200 on a luxurious hotel in Mexico, the Caribbean, or Europe during the off-season. This amounts to wasting $1,680 to $2,400 a year, which could have been used to purchase two or three round-trip tickets to Australia. This does not even include the additional expenses such as gas, parking, and high-end workout clothing. Often, these gym classes and fitness centers sell branded merchandise, and if you forget to bring socks, you may have to buy a pair for $12 to $16.

Although I enjoyed the appearance and sensation gained from attending those classes, my intention is to cultivate the ability to exercise at home with self-discipline. I have found a solution through utilizing YouTube workout videos, as there are an abundance of effective channels that are accessible at no cost. They can assist in achieving physical fitness, attaining your objectives, and improving your mental well-being.

The best (and most travel-friendly!) workouts on YouTube in 2023

Watching exercise videos on YouTube is a great way to save money. Finding the right videos may take some effort, but don't worry, I can give you recommendations that fit your requirements. I have searched for channels that cater to people who travel a lot and need workouts that don't use much equipment. For those that do require equipment, I have chosen items that are portable, like foldable mats, resistance bands, and stylish wrist or ankle weights called Bala Bangles.

YouTube offers a variety of effective exercise routines that can benefit your physical and mental well-being all year round. Some of the channels offer workouts that I have personally attempted, while others have received positive feedback from others. These exercises are particularly useful for maintaining your health and endurance while traveling or exploring new places, and can be conveniently performed in hotel rooms or guesthouses!

Move with Nicole

I already had some experience with Pilates, but after trying the workouts with Nicole on Move, I have developed a great passion for this exercise. Nicole provides guidance through a typical Pilates routine, along with incorporating HIIT, yoga, and barre styles in her videos. Her calm and supportive voice and attitude help you to persevere through the tough moments. While you may experience soreness initially, your body will gradually become stronger, and ultimately, you will be able to complete her workouts with ease.

She offers workout sessions that vary in length from 15 to 60 minutes, giving you the option to choose shorter exercises if you are short on time. She even provides 5-minute quick workouts.

The majority of her videos necessitate only your body weight and a mat, although she also includes resistance bands and light weights to increase the workout's intensity and build muscle. For her barre exercises, she may also employ balls and chairs.

Fitness Blender

Fitness Blender is a well-established YouTube channel for exercise with Daniel and Kelli, a married couple, leading the fitness regime since 2010. Their goal is to ensure affordable and accessible fitness for everyone, irrespective of their income level, prioritizing people over profit. Instead of expensive gym memberships, they provide equally effective workout routines.

Fitness Blender's channel boasts an impressive collection of over 600 videos! While they primarily concentrate on weightlifting, they also offer an abundance of bodyweight, HIIT, and equipment-free exercises. Regardless of the workout you choose, you can expect to work up a significant sweat. Moreover, their videos vary from 10 to 60 minutes in length. If you have limited time, you can choose a 10-minute video or combine a few to create a complete hour-long session.

In addition, they provide instructional videos demonstrating how to make mouth-watering, nutritious, and expedient dishes such as burrito bowls, scrambled eggs, cookies, and home-made pizza.

Kukuwa Fitness

During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, I stumbled upon Kukuwa Fitness and immediately became a fan. The founder, Kukuwa, leads the workout alongside her two daughters, Cassie and Sam, who take turns leading exercises throughout the video. Despite her age, Kukuwa possesses an impressive level of energy and enthusiasm, leaving viewers in awe. Many people who watched the video thought she was the sisters of her daughters. Despite their challenging workouts, their energetic personalities make it hard to be upset. Cecilio noted that I seemed happy working out with them.

Kukukua strives to introduce African culture to you through dance fitness. In certain videos, it incorporates dance moves inspired by a diverse range of African countries including Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, and other.

Kukuwa offers workout sessions ranging from 15 to 20 minutes and some that last for 30 to 45 minutes, such as my favorite African Dance Jam and African Dance & Sculpt. It should be noted, however, that these videos are challenging even though they are fun to perform. Despite finding it difficult to keep up with the videos, I'm pleased with the high intensity that raises my heart rate. It's more enjoyable than running.
